Regulation

Keniston is registered with a government body called the Housing Corporation. The Housing Corporation funds and regulates Housing Associations in England.

The Housing Corporation provides a person for each association who is the “Lead Regulator”; this person is responsible for all regulatory matters and has an annual meeting with the

Director and Chair to review how matters are going.
Following recent changes to the way that the Housing Corporation carried out its regulation, Keniston is now regulated under the “Regulatory Assessment for Small Associations” framework, which involves a “lighter touch” as the Corporation describes it.

Periodically Associations are “inspected” by the Audit Commission. Inspectors who visit Associations often include tenant inspectors. This is a very thorough review of the operational and governance matters, and recommendations will be made for improvements where necessary. Inspectors look for a culture of continuous improvement. You can read inspection reports on the Audit Commission website - click here. Recent guidance suggests that associations with less than 1,000 units will not fall into the routine programme of inspection, so there is no inspection planned for Keniston.

The Housing Corporation publishes short written reports on individual associations called Housing Corporation Assessments. In addition, a further annual return has to be made to the Financial Services Agency which regulates Industrial and Provident Societies.

Keniston is also a member of the National Housing Federation which is a membership organisation representing and lobbying on behalf of its 1400 plus housing association members in the country. To find out more about the National Housing Federation you can visit www.housing.org.uk.
